2014 Porsche 911 Turbo S

The 2014 Porsche 911 Turbo will arrive with impressive technology and its price tag reflects that. Porsche has released the 2014 911 Turbo’s specifications and pricing, which starts at $149,250, including the $950 destination fee. Those stepping up to the 911 Turbo S will have to fork over $182,050.

The new 2014 911 Turbo’s MSRP represents a $10,800 price jump over the outgoing 997-series 911 Turbo, though that difference shrinks to $6250 when the outgoing 911 Turbo is equipped with a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic. The new 911 Turbo is highlighted by a twin-turbo 3.8-liter boxer six that produces 520 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to all four-wheels via a new all-wheel-drive system and seven-speed dual-clutch automatic; the six-speed manual is no longer offered. Other standard items include an active rear axle steering system, full-LED headlights, 20-inch wheels, and active aerodynamics.

The Turbo S model is $20,400 more expensive than the outgoing 997-series and gets a power bump to 560 hp and 516 lb-ft. Additionally, the S gets a standard carbon ceramic brakes, Sport Chrono Package Plus, 18-way adjustable sport seats, and an active anti-roll system dubbed Porsche Dynamic Chassis Control (PDCC); these items are available as options on the base Turbo.

Porsche says the 0-60 mph sprints will take just 3.2 seconds for the Turbo (equipped with Sport Chrono) and 2.9 seconds for the Turbo S. We’re guessing those times are conservative, meaning one or both 2014 911 Turbo models could beat the 2014 Nissan GT-R Track Edition’s Motor-Trend-tested 0-60 mph time of 2.7 seconds. Top speed for both models is just shy of 200 mph. Both models are slated to arrive in showrooms by the end of this year.

Porsche Unveils 991 GT3 in Geneva

It's something of a ritual, really, and it dates back to the 964: Whenever Porsche changes the 911, the first reaction from the purists (and, let's admit it, the press too) is that it has somehow lost something of the previous model's character. Never mind that this “character” sometimes felt like killing you…
Imagine what’s going to happen now that Stuttgart has tampered with one of the holy cows in the 911 ziggurat.

The venerable GT3 no longer uses the old Mezger unit (which also powered the Turbo), and now comes with an electrically assisted power steering, while adding insult to injury, you can have any gearbox you like as long as it’s the updated dual-clutch PDK semi-auto.

Well, at least the flat-six engine's still in the right/wrong (delete as appropriate) place, there’s a fixed rear wing, twin center exhausts, huge wheels housing equally big stoppers and a big, menacing bumper up front.

Porsche has just released its first video containing driving footage of the 991-gen GT3 that is available after the break. It may be short but it’s mostly action – which, we suspect, is what anyone interested in the new, 469HP GT3 wants to see.

Like every year, the Volkswagen Group held a special media event on the night before the opening of the Geneva International Auto Salon, where it rolled out all a selection of its world premieres.

Two of the most eye-catching and talked about models were the Lamborghini Veneno and the Porsche 911 GT3 – coincidentally, the former to celebrate the Italian brand's 50th anniversary, and the latter the 50th birthday of the 911 series.

Bugatti showed off another specially version of the Veyron hypercar, while Bentley was represented by the new Flying Spur luxury sedan, and Italdesign by the Lamborghini-powered Parcour concept cars.

Other new models to go on show were the super-frugal VW XL1, of which only 250 examples will be built, the VW e-Co-Motion van, the Audi A3 Sportback e-tron and RS6 Avant, the Seat Leon SC, and the latest generation of the Skoda Octavia.

We'll have more pictures and details on each car from the Geneva Motor Show tomorrow morning.

New Porsche 911 GT3 Boasts 469HP, Laps the Nürburgring in Under 7:30

As far as celebrating a golden anniversary goes, we'd say that Porsche got Lamborghini licked. While the Italian manufacturer chose to mark its 50th anniversary by launching an ultra-expensive, outrageously styled version of the Aventador that will be made in just three examples, its German “relative”, since they both belong to the VW Group, celebrated the 50th birthday of the 911 by unveiling the new GT3.

This is the fifth model to wear the GT3 badge since the 996-series original. All the “right” parts are present and accounted for: the fixed rear wing, single-lock alloys, istinctive front bumper with air vents on the bonnet, wide rear wings (by 44 mm compared to the Carrera S). Under the skin, though, it's very different from what has gone before.

Instead of the race-derived “split” crankcase “Metzger” engine, named after Hans Metzger who designed it for the 964 air-cooled series, the 991-based GT3 is powered by an evolution of the DFI (Direct Fuel Injection) 3.8-liter flat-six that's used in the regular Carrera S.

Porsche claims that the two units only share a few parts, as most components, such as the crankshaft, valve gear, titanium connecting rods and forged pistons are unique to the GT3.

The new engine revs to 9,000 rpm, 500 more than the 997-gen GT3, and boasts 469HP (475PS) and a power to weight ratio of 3.0 kg/HP. This enables it to record a 3.5-second 0-100 km/h (0-62 mph) acceleration time and a top speed of 315 km/h (195 mph), while 0-200 km/h (0-125 mph) takes less than 12 seconds.

Oh, and it laps the Nordschleife in “under 7:30”. That’s fast, if you consider that in Porsche-conducted tests, the GT2 recorded a 7:32.0 lap time and the Carrera GT 7:28.0 – both with WRC champion Walter Röhrl behind the wheel…

Another break with tradition is the use of electrically-assisted power steering and a dual-clutch gearbox instead of a manual transmission. Although the seven-speed PDK is based on the existing unit used by lesser 911s, Porsche Motorsport has redesigned it to resemble the sequential units used in racing cars and changes occur in less than 100 milliseconds.

The all-new 911 GT3 is the first Porsche to use active rear wheel steering. This steers the rear wheels in the same or opposite direction compared to the front ones depending on speed to improve both stability and agility.

The GT3 rides on 20-inch alloys and its suspension can be adjusted by height, toe and camber. Dynamic engine mounts are standard, as is an electronically controlled rear differential lock.

Porsche announced that the new 911 GT3 will go on sale in August 2013 and will be priced at €137,303 (US$178,856 at today’s exchange rate) in Germany.

Although it looks delicious, the break with tradition is too extensive: electric steering, DFI engine, no manual gearbox, rear-wheel steer… it’s a bit too much and it takes time for all to sink in.

Luckily, Evo magazine’s Jethro Bovingdon interviewed Porsche Motorsport manager Andreas Preuninger about the new GT3 – and the latter explained all the changes in great detail.

What’s more, he insists that, despite being an all-new car, it delivers the goods one has come to expect from the hardcore version of the 911.

All-New 2014 Porsche 911 GT3 Breaks Cover Ahead of the Geneva Auto Salon

What we have here is the first batch of official images of the all-new, 991-generation, Porsche 911 GT3, revealed in advance of the car's world premiere at 83rd Geneva International Auto Show in Switzerland this Tuesday.

We're still lacking official details, but from what we've heard, the new 911 GT3 will feature a high-revving normally aspirated flat six with a displacement of 3.8-liters producing around 450-horses (about 50hp more than the new 911 Carrera S) connected for the first time to Porsche's dual-clutch PDK transmission, instead of a manual gearbox (though, it could be offered as an option).

The most focused 991 model yet, sports a new exterior bodykit with a lowered front bumper featuring a lip spoiler that wraps up to the wheel arches, different mirrors and headlamps, side skirts, a bespoke rear bumper with a diffuser and central exhaust pipes, plus a rear wing and its own alloy wheels.

The interior of the GT3 is dressed in a combination of black leather and Alcantara surfaces accented with red stitching.

Stay tuned, as we'll update this post as soon as we get an official word from Porsche.

2013 Goodwood FoS Central Feature To Mark 50 Years Of The Porsche 911

We’re starting to lose count of all the automotive anniversaries taking place this year, but one of the most significant is the 50th anniversary of the Porsche 911 sports car.

Clearly Porsche has a lot planned to mark the occasion but so do organizers of the Goodwood Festival of Speed, an event that in 2013 is also celebrating its own 20th anniversary.

Each year during summer, the grounds outside Goodwood House in Goodwood, England, plays host to some of the most exciting, unique, and historic cars of the past and present.

Also each year, a gigantic sculpture celebrating a theme is unveiled.

Organizers of the festival have now confirmed that 2013’s sculpture will honor the 911. They say it’s only appropriate, as the iconic sports car is one of only a few cars that have featured at every single Goodwood Festival of Speed, from the first event in 1993--when an unexpectedly high 27,500 enthusiasts turned up--to the 185,000+ visitors that attended the event last year.

In addition to the sculpture, a procession of racing and road-going 911s will also be appearing, and no doubt they will be attacking the 1.16-mile Goodwood hillclimb, spitting gravel sideways around the Forest Rally Stage, or sitting serenely at the Cartier ‘Style et Luxe’ concours lawn.

There will also be several other historic Porsche models present, including the 356, 908, 917 and 962.

This year’s Goodwood Festival of Speed takes place from July 11-14. For our ongoing coverage of the event

Audi R8 V8 Versus Porsche 911 Carrera 4S on the Track

Take a look at the Volkswagen Group's vast lineup of cars and you will be hard pressed to find two vehicles competing for the same buyers that are so different to each other.

On one side, you have the recently updated Audi R8, which sports a 424hp (430PS) 4.2-liter naturally breathing V8 engine positioned right behind the driver linked to an all-wheel drive system.

It’s rival from Stuttgart, continues the tradition of the Porsche 911 with a flat-six engine sitting on top of the rear axle, and which in the case of the all-wheel drive 4S, has a displacement of 3.8-liters and an output of 394hp (400PS).

British magazine Autoexpress brought the two rivaling sports car together to see which one is faster and better on a racing track. See what they came up with in the video after the break.

2014 Porsche Cayman

The all-new 2014 Porsche Cayman Mk3 Coupe was unveiled today at the Los Angeles Auto Show.  As expected, the new Cayman coupe is virtually identical to the Boxter roadster (because that’s what it’s based on) released earlier this year; and that’s a good thing.

The 2014 Cayman coupe is a lot more elegant than the car it replaces and the roof doesn’t look like an afterthought, it goes well with the rest of the car.  According to the German car maker, the new Cayman is a 3rd generation car; I guess they considered the minor facelift they gave the Cayman a few years ago, the 2nd generation.  We don’t really care what generation it’s called, all we care about is the specs, which can be found below.

The 2014 Porsche Cayman coupe is powered by a 2.7 liter 6-cylinder boxer engine (replacing the 2.9 liter unit) producing 275 horsepower at 7,400 rpm and 213 pound-feet (289 Nm) of torque at 4,500 rpm.  The 2014 Cayman S is powered by a 3.4 liter 6-cylinder boxer engine producing 325 HP at 7,400 rpm and 272 pound-feet (369 Nm) of torque at 4,500 rpm.

The base Cayman coupe equipped with a 6-speed manual transmission accelerates to 62 mph (100 km/h) in 5.7 seconds, cars equipped with the 7-speed dual-clutch PDK transmission get to 62 mph in 5.6 seconds, and 5.4 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package.  The Cayman S reaches 62 mph in 5.0 seconds with the 6-speed manual transmission, 4.9 seconds with the PDK transmission, and 4.7 seconds with the Sport Chrono Package.

The interior has also been upgraded, it’s now inline with the rest of the Porsche interior which have been a huge step forward over most of the previous offerings from Porsche.
The new Porsche Cayman coupe is 66 pounds (30 kg) lighter, has a 40% stiffer body, and is 15% more fuel efficient than the car it replaces.  The car is also lower and longer than its predecessor.  The Cayman was already a fun car to drive; with lighter weight, lower center of gravity, and more power, it’ll make for a hell of a fun ride.

The 2014 Porsche Cayman coupe will be available in U.S. showrooms in early 2013 with a starting price of $52,600 for the base model and $63,800 for the Cayman S.  Prices will be considerably higher in European markets.

Fifth Gear's Season 22 Premiere Airs Next Monday, Vicki Fights Jets With a Boxster S

You wait ages for the new season of a new TV car show and, typically, two come along at the same time. After Top Gear’s premiere on January 27 on BBC, Fifth Gear’s debut episode of the 22nd season will air in a week’s time, on Monday, February 11 on the Discovery Channel.

The first two teasers about one of the first episodes’ stories are now available. They include Vicki Butler-Henderson, a very yellow Porsche Boxster S, an airfield runway and the world’s largest civilian aerobatic display team.

It’s the French-based Breitling Jet Team, which flies seven Aero L-39 “Albatros” jets. The L-39 is a Czech-built trainer that has been produces in nearly 2,800 units and has served with 30 air force units around the world.

As it is being replaced by the newer L-159, many have been sold to civilians; in fact, they are very popular in the States, too, due to their relatively low cost, which ranges between US$200,000-300,000, and probably the most famous owner is auto industry exec Bob Lutz.

You can view the videos of Vicki explaining the challenge and making gunning the 315HP open-top Porsche in the runway right after the break.
