2013 Renault Twin-Run Concept

The rumors were true: Renault’s new Twin’Run concept, which debuted today at the Monaco Grand Prix, does channel the spirit of the wild Renault 5 Turbo rally car of the 1980s.

Renault has hinted that the Twin’Run ties in with a string of concept cars dating back to the 2010 De’Zir, but this latest concept has more in common with the Twin’Z show car unveiled earlier this year. Although that car was a five-door battery-electric vehicle, it still drew its inspiration from the old Renault 5 subcompact. The Twin’Run – which bears a close resemblance to the Twin’Z – does the same, but specifically the 5 Turbo: a rear-engined, Alpine-assembled monster originally created for Group B rally racing.

Renault Twinrun Concept
Renault Twinrun Concept

The Twin’Run’s shape and surfacing is almost identical to the Twin’Z, but a little more muscular and aggressive. The front fascia boasts a large, open lower air intake, and is topped with four square LED driving lights. The 5 Turbo’s blistering rear fenders are nowhere to be found, but large air intakes are tucked into the C-pillars, giving a hint to its mid-engine configuration.

Renault TwinRun Concept Front Three Quarters View on Track

With the exception of the carbon fiber roof and wheel wells, the Twin’Run’s bodywork is fabricated out of fiberglass and then draped upon a bespoke tube-frame chassis. That framework is especially evident within the interior, despite Renault’s attempts at dressing up the cabin. A rounded, white instrument panel echoes the shape of the original R5 Turbo’s but boasts a large, multi-function LCD panel that replaces most mechanical gauges. The dashboard and door panels are trimmed in red Alcantara, while the bucket seats use the same faux-suede albeit in three different shades. Vive les 80s.

The cockpit is separated from the engine compartment by means of a plexiglass panel located just aft of the front seats. Unlike the R5 Turbo, the Twin’Run doesn’t use a small four-cylinder engine – or, for that matter, forced induction. Instead, Nissan’s VQ35 3.5-liter V-6 – the same engine found once found in the 350Z and Infiniti G35 — is planted amidship, and mated with a six-speed sequential gearbox. Power is then routed through a limited-slip differential to the rear wheels.

Renault Twin'Run Concept
Renault Twin'Run Concept

Renault says the 3.5-liter V-6 serves up 320 hp and 380 Nm of torque. That sounds somewhat pedestrian until you consider the Twin’Z is almost the exact same size of a Fiat 500, and tips the scales at 2100 pounds – 400 pounds less than a 500 Abarth. That crazy power-to-weight ratio allows for a 0-62 mph time of 4.5 seconds and a top speed of 155 mph. And, despite placing a large V-6 in the tail, the Twin’Run boasts a relatively even 43/57 front/rear weight distribution.

That’s pretty cool, but is it a proper successor to the R5 Turbo? According to Jean Ragnotti, former R5 rally racer and the man Renault hired to tune the Twin’Run’s handling, it certainly is.

“I’d say this is a sound car with a sound pedegree,” Ragnotti dished in a prepared press release. “It’s easy to control. All we need to sharpen our attacking edge a bit more are racing tires. There’s a slight roll but no understeer. There’s excellent traction with a responsive engine delivering full power at all revs, and with more torque than the R5 Turbo. [That] makes it particularly efficient and easy to drive, unlike the R5, which required more technique.”

That said, don’t expect this to follow in the R5 Turbo’s footsteps and become a production – or rally – reality in the near future.

New Renault Captur Puts a Crossover Twist to the Clio Platform

Making its first public appearance today in front of a crowd at the Geneva Auto Salon, is the brand-new Renault Captur, a sub-compact crossover based on the Clio's familiar "B-Platform", which also underpins the Nissan Juke, with which it will compete in the European market.

Renault Captur

The French carmaker says the Captur combines "the best of the MPV, SUV and hatchback worlds" in a single package, one that measures 4.12m long, 1.77m wide and 1.57m tall, with a ground clearance of 200mm.

Unlike the Juke, the Captur is offered exclusively with front wheel drive and an initial selection of three engines, a 1.2-liter turbocharged TCe petrol in either 89hp (90PS) or 118hp (120PS) versions, the latter only with a dual-clutch EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) transmission, and an 89hp (90PS) turbo diesel, which can be optionally equipped with the EDC.

One of the highlights of the Captur is the ability to customize its appearance through two-tone paintworks, exterior décor graphics, the color of the wheels, the interior trims and a range of eight, interchangeable, 'Zip Collection' zipped seat covers.

Renault Heats up New Clio GT by RenaultSport for the Geneva Motor Show

We knew Renault had plans to bridge the gap between the Clio RS 200 EDC and lesser Clio models, and here it is: the new Clio GT, which judging by the rear license plate, was developed by the brand's RenaultSport performance division.

2014 Renault Clio GT

2014 Renault Clio GT

2014 Renault Clio GT

2014 Renault Clio GT

We say this because we don't have an official statement from the French carmaker yet, only these four images.

Compared to the regular Clio Mk4s, the GT gains a new front bumper housing larger air vents and LED daytime running lights, a more aggressive front grille that looks like the one fitted on the 197hp (200PS) Clio RS, darkened headlamps, different door and mirror trims, larger alloy wheels and a rear diffuser with twin chrome pipes.

The big question is what's lurking under the hood. If we were to take a guess, we'd say there's a strong possibility the new GT features Renault's new 1.2-liter four-cylinder turbocharged petrol engine (TCe 120) with 118hp (120PS) and 190Nm (140 lb-ft), but we'll have to wait for the official release to be sure.

Renault Itself Test Drives the New Clio RS 200 EDC

The all-new Clio RS 200 EDC is a very important car for Renault, and the French manufacturer is keen to point out the improvements over the previous generation car with an in-house test drive of its hot hatch. It is of course a biased review of the Clio, but since the first customer cars are set to be delivered in mid-March, this is all we have to go on until the car becomes available to the motoring press.

The Renault “reviewer” talks about how the new car is a more practical, economical and usable compared to the car it replaces. It is now bigger, has two more doors and its 1.6-liter turbocharged engine has more torque at low revs and some 20 percent more fuel-efficient than the outgoing model’s screaming naturally-aspirated 2.0-liter unit.

The car has also been fitted with an intake resonator, like the one found on the new Ford Focus ST, which amplifies engine noise, without making it overly-intrusive. In addition, if the owner opts for the optional R-Link touchscreen infotainment system, a wide assortment of engine noises can be chosen, and the sound will be piped through the car's sound system - we say that's a bit of a gimmick, which will most likely not be appreciated by hot hatch purists.

Following in the footsteps of the VW Polo GTI and the Skoda Fabia vRS, Renault has ditched the six-speed manual gearbox used in the old model, in favor of a modern dual-clutch setup with paddle shifters they call EDC (Efficient Dual Clutch) - a manual version is not offered at all. This coupled with the engine's flat torque curve should make the Clio a more relaxing car to drive when not in ‘hoon-mode’.

2013 Renault Clio RS 200

If you were waiting for the new Renault Clio RS 200 to have a normally-aspirated engine and a manual gearbox, you are out of luck as the new model is a more focused hot hatch than its predecessor. It will be sold only with a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine linked to a 6-speed dual-clutch automatic gearbox. It has the same amount of power as the model it replaces – 197 bhp (147 kW) – but at 6,000 rpm as opposed to the outgoing version which provides the entire horsepower at 7,200 rpm.

The torque figure is also up by 19 lb-ft (26 Nm) to 177 lb-ft (234 Nm). It reaches this peak torque at 1,750 rpm, considerably less than the old model’s 5,400 rpm. That dual-clutch transmission that we mentioned it’s called EDC – Efficient Dual Clutch and can either be left alone working on its own or it can be manually controlled with the help of the shifters mounted on the steering wheel. When in Race mode, changing a gear takes a mere 150 milliseconds.
There’s also the Normal and Sport model which are selectable with the help of an RS button. The changes made have to do with the engine parameters and gearbox mapping, as wheel as the response of the throttle pedal and the steering feel.

Unfortunately the French automaker did not release any performance figures, but when Race mode is activated it’s safe to assume that the 0-62 mph (0-100 km/h) is achieved in less than 6.5 seconds. We should also mention that the Renault Clio RS 200 will be offered with an optional Launch Control system so the sprint will be achieved even quicker.

As standard, the hot hatch comes with 17-inch alloy wheels but for more money 18-inch alloys are available. The stopping power comes from the 320mm discs at the front which are 8mm bigger than the ones on the outgoing Clio RS.

The design is what you’d expect from an RS model, looking more aggressive than the standard fourth-gen Clio, with a front F1-style blade, a spoiler and rear diffuser, LED DRLs, sill extensions and redesigned bumpers. The cabin is red-trimmed and includes sports bucket seats that for additional money can be wrapped around in leather. Standard goodies include starter button, hands free entry, Bluetooth and USB support, touchscreen navigation and the company’s new R-Link infotainment system. Parking sensors and automatic climate control are on the options list.

2013 Renault Clio Estate

New Renault Clio Estate offers all the qualities of the New Clio hatch, from comfort and safety, to vitality, features worthy of higher segments and two multimedia options. It heralds the launch of R-Link, Renault's multimedia tablet that forms an innovative link between the car and a networked lifestyle. The catalog of R-Link apps is unparalleled on the automotive market, and is available right from system launch.

New Clio Estate is equipped with a selection of latest-generation engines, including the Energy TCe 90 3-cylinder petrol unit and the Diesel Energy dCi 90 powerplant, which consumes just 3.2 l per 100km and is on a par with hybrids in terms of CO2 emissions, outputting just 83 g / km.

The renewed engine range is completed by the arrival of the EDC dual-clutch gearbox, which will be available on the TCe 120 engine in the first half of 2013, and on the dCi 90 at a later date.

INSPIRED BY SHOOTING BRAKES

Renault has added an original take on an estate to its New Clio range that continues the brand's drive towards irresistibly attractive styling. New Clio Estate arrives hot on the heels of New Clio hatch, the first vehicle in the range that fully expressed the renewal of Renault Design, initiated by Laurens van den Acker. With its refreshingly attractive lines and distinctive personality, inspired by sports tourers from higher up the range, New Clio Estate is clearly the second descendant of DeZir.

ELEGANT AND PRACTICAL

New Renault Clio Estate was one of the major revelations on the Renault stand at the 2012 Paris Motor Show. While it shares the same dynamic breeding as the hatchback, New Renault Clio Estate has its very own identity, with its carefully honed and fluid silhouette. Measuring 4.267m in length, this compact break is both high on style and accommodating. The wheelbase is the same as the hatchback, but at 825mm, the rear overhang is 204mm longer.

Research reveals that estate-car customers are strongly drawn towards the aesthetic design cues of shooting brakes. New Renault Clio Estate certainly has that style, along with practicality and versatility for good measure.

With its long bonnet and pronounced shoulder line, the profile flows smoothly to the rear, where the straight tailgate emphasizes the volume of the boot. As on the hatchback, the rear door handles are concealed in the C-pillars. The quarter light uprights and center pillars are integrated in the glass surfaces, producing an impression of harmonious continuity. The tailgate is topped by a curved wing above the rear window that elongates and stretches the line of the roof, which appears to float elegantly.

New Clio Estate is also fitted with roof bars (aluminum in certain finishes) that blend in with the roof line. The optional glass roof makes for an even brighter interior.

UNMATCHED PERSONALIZATION

With New Renault Clio Estate, personalization finally comes naturally to a genuine sports tourer, and is available to the greatest number and in the top-selling versions.

The personalization offer is made up of three distinctive finishes - Trendy, Elegant and Sport - and a range of configurations of external hues, one dominant color for the decor and wheels, plus a graphic theme. Personalization was built into New Renault Clio Estate right from the drawing board, enhancing the car's strong personality with zones dedicated to the custom features that were reserved as part of the vehicle's design process. The mid-range versions can be personalized too, for an attractive and modular offer, and the factoryinstallation of the custom features guarantees incomparable quality.

For the exterior
  • Gloss black lacquer on the door mirror housings, rear bumper apron and side protective moldings, plus five different shades for the trim on the grille, rear hatch and side protective moldings (chrome, black, red, blue or ivory).
  • Black and ivory for the 16" diamond-effect wheels, plus four colors for the 17" diamond-effect wheels (black, red, blue and ivory).

For the interior
  • Four ambience color schemes in the Dynamique equipment level: black, red, blue and Havana on the dashboard edging and door panels and upholstery trim. A finishing touch for each ambience comes in the form of carpet mats, available as accessories.
  • The steering wheel, door panels, gear lever surround and air vent surrounds and are available in seven schemes: four colors (black, red, blue, Ivory) and three decorative finishes (Trendy, Elegant and Sport), directly incorporated using in-mold technology.

COLORS

Like the hatch version, New Renault Clio Estate will be available from launch in a choice of eight body colors, including the distinctive launch color, Flame Red, which takes its inspiration from the DeZir concept car.

  • Non-metallic finishes: Glacier White, French blue, Inca Yellow
  • Metallic finishes: Ardent Brown, Diamond Black, Flame Red, Mercury Grey, Oyster Grey

DESIGNED FOR USE AT THE WHEEL IN COMPLETE SAFETY

The system's functions are designed to be used intuitively and in complete safety by drivers, without taking their eyes off the road. Designed for intuitive use, Renault R-Link features fingertip and voice controls.
  • Fingertip control of every function using the touchscreen or the audio and telephone controls mounted on the steering wheel.
  • Intuitive voice control that drivers can use to dictate the address of their destination or to give simple instructions, such as "make a call", (followed by a number or a name in the contacts), "go to…" or "drive to" (followed by a destination), "launch…" (followed by an application name) such as "launch e-mail".

The Text To Speech function (TTS) permits messages or RSS feeds from certain applications to be read out loud automatically when the vehicle is on the move.

2013 Renault ZOE

ZOE is Renault's solution to Zero Emission mobility for all. In addition to being a first class choice for everyday use and readily affordable (from just €15,700) Renault ZOE is the first pure-electric car to be designed from the ground up as such. ZOE is packed with the latest technology and boasts no fewer than six world premieres geared to enhancing user-friendliness, range and connectivity.

2013 Renault ZOE

For the first time, the conditions necessary for the widespread roll-out of electric vehicles are well and truly in place.

Unveiled at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show, Renault ZOE will go on sale autumn 2012. Its launch marks the beginning of a new era: an era of electric vehicles for all.

Style imbued with purity and emotion

Renault ZOE's final design is being world-premiered at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. Designed as a pure-electric car from the ground up, ZOE is a compact hatchback with sleek, fluid lines. Its agile, dynamic looks express driving enjoyment, while its signature headlights feature LEDs that permanently light up recesses situated either side of the front air intake. Like Twingo and Twizy, ZOE features the Renault brand's new design identity.

Electric mobility for all, from just €15,700

Today, for the first time, it is possible to buy an electric vehicle at a price close to that of a diesel-engined city car in markets where tax incentives are available. For example:
  • In France, tax-paid prices for Renault ZOE start from €15,700 (with tax incentive of €5,000 deducted).
  • In the United Kingdom, where a subsidy of £4,333 is available, tax-paid prices for ZOE start from £13,650 (equivalent to €16,450 at current exchange rates).

Even in countries where tax incentives are not currently available, prices for Renault ZOE are still particularly attractive. In Switzerland, for example, ZOE's catalogue price is CHF 22,800, which is equivalent to approximately €18,900 at current exchange rates).

The cost of leasing the battery starts from €79/month (price for a 36-month contract and a distance travelled of 12,500km/year), inclusive of comprehensive breakdown assistance (which covers flat batteries).

Since March 6, it has been possible to pre-order ZOE in 11 countries at a bespoke website (Renault-ZE.com). Customers who reserve Renault ZOE will be offered a test drive and will be contacted on a priority basis as soon as the car goes on sale.

ZOE, a raft of innovations for a new form of motoring

More than 60 patents have been filed for ZOE's design. Range, interactivity and occupant wellbeing are at the core of the vehicle's innovations.

Renault ZOE, the first mass-market electric vehicle to be homologated with an NEDC cycle range of 210 km

In terms of autonomy, Renault has developed the 'Range OptimiZEr', that combines three major innovations (new-generation regenerative braking, a heat pump and MICHELIN EnergyTM E-V tyres). Due to this, the range of ZOE is the highest of the electric vehicles in mass production. In the NEDC cycle, ZOE is homologated with a range of 210km. In real conditions, for example, in suburban use, the owner will generally achieve around 100km in cold weather and 150km in temperate conditions.

New-generation regenerative braking recovers practically all of the energy otherwise wasted during braking, without any significant impact on ZOE's onroad dynamics. The car offers a perfectly smooth drive with no jarring electric motor braking. The system works in two ways:
  • The kinetic energy produced under deceleration and braking is recovered by the motor so that it can be converted into electricity to charge the battery. This feature is also fitted to Fluence Z.E. and Kangoo Z.E.
  • When the driver presses the brake pedal, the system intelligently distributes the braking effort between applying the brake pads and the electric motor brake with a view to maximising the use of the electric motor brake and charging of the battery.

The heat pump provides excellent thermal comfort without detracting from the vehicle's range. This system, which operates in the same way as reverse-cycle air-conditioning, consumes very little electricity. It produces warm or cool air by simply reversing the cycle of operation. The heat pump generates approximately 2kW of cooling or 3kW of heat with just 1kW of electricity. The cabin temperature is also more constant since it is not affected by the heat given off by the motor.

The MICHELIN EnergyTM E-V tyre is a Michelin innovation co-developed with Renault as a world premiere for Renault ZOE. The tyre features enhanced energy efficiency to maximise vehicle range. Its rubber compound, tread design and sidewalls have been engineered to withstand ZOE's high torque and address the specific demands of electric vehicles, yet it still delivers the same safety and handling performance as all other Michelin tyres. Available in 15- and 16-inch versions, this tyre is fitted to all ZOE models as original equipment.

The Chameleon charger revolutionises electric vehicle charging

Renault ZOE is the only electric vehicle to feature the Caméléon charger. Patented by Renault, this charger is compatible with all power levels up to 43kW. Charging batteries at a charging station can take between 30 minutes and nine hours. For example, ZOE can be charged in an hour at 22kW. This intermediate power level extends battery life and puts less pressure on the power grid than the fast-charging of batteries at 43kW.

The Chameleon charger allows fast-charging at charging stations at a quarter of the cost

Fast-charging stations are currently equipped with high-power chargers. Now that the Caméléon charger is fitted to the vehicle, there is no longer any need for chargers at charging stations. New fast-charging stations will be opened which are easier and more cost-effective. They will cost less than €3,000, a quarter of the cost of existing fast-charging stations. Charging stations of this type are being previewed on the Renault stand at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show.

Brand-new Renault R-Link multimedia system on ZOE

Renault ZOE is the first Renault vehicle to be presented with Renault R-Link, Renault's brand-new integrated, connected multimedia system. To enable drivers to control its functions without taking their eyes off the road, R-Link features a large seven-inch display, steering wheel-mounted controls and speech recognition. R-Link also delivers integrated connectivity with motoring services and applications available from the R-Link Store. When released, R-Link Store will offer more than 50 applications adapted for life on the move thanks to an active partnership with application developers. These apps will be downloadable directly inside the car or via owners' My Renault account.

R-Link also includes a host of new functions dedicated to electric motoring and range management: histogram of energy consumption, display of energy flows and preprogramming of battery charging. The navigation system offers bespoke services such as a display of the vehicle's operating radius based on the range remaining in the battery, suggestions for the most energy-efficient itineraries and the location of nearby battery charging stations (depending on country), as well as their real-time availability. R-Link also lets drivers view their eco-driving performance and improve their technique with 'eco-scoring' and tips (general and personalised).

A relaxing, enjoyable drive

Driving Renault ZOE is a unique experience which gives new meaning to the term 'driving pleasure'. The synchronous electric motor with rotor coil has a power output of 65kW and instantly delivers maximum torque of 220Nm. Acceleration and pull-away are responsive from low speeds. Driving is more relaxing thanks to the silent ride and smooth, gearshift-free acceleration.

For stress-free driving in built-up areas, ZOE is fitted with 'Z.E. Voice', an alarm which warns pedestrians that the vehicle is approaching. 'Z.E. Voice' can be heard from 1 to 30kph and was the subject of special design work to create a bespoke sound identity for ZOE. The driver can choose between three different sounds, while it is possible to turn off the warning system by simply pressing a button.

The perfect temperature inside Renault ZOE's cabin

Programmable pre-conditioning heats or cools ZOE's cabin when the vehicle is charging. When the driver gets into the car, the cabin is just the right temperature and the energy used for the thermal comfort system is not drawn from the battery.

The air breathed in by ZOE's occupants is purer

An activated charcoal cabin air filter traps most bad smells and pollutants. It also filters substances just a few microns in size, such as pollen and soot.

The 'Zen' version embodies the world of ZOE

The choice of colours and materials for the 'Zen' version recalls purity and wellbeing: white, blue and chrome, plus a soft-feel dashboard. Renault ZOE Zen is fitted with 'Take Care by Renault' equipment as standard.

Launched with Renault Latitude, the 'Take Care' signature is a guarantee of premium features dedicated to occupant wellbeing and travelling comfort. In addition to the pre-conditioning function and active charcoal cabin filter, it includes:
  • A relaxing or stimulating scent diffuser. The effectiveness of the scents has been proven by a study conducted by the German institute Psyrecon.
  • A dual-mode purifying and relaxing air ioniser: the purifying function eliminates the bacteria found in the cabin air. The relaxing function generates negative ions to produce a balance with the positive ions, which are present in high concentrations in a confined space such as a car's interior.
  • A toxicity sensor: this system detects excessive pollution levels and automatically switches on the air recycling mode in the cabin.
  • Teflon® upholstery protection, for easier cleaning: this invisible, odourless treatment is both waterproof and stain-proof.

ZOE underpins Renault's environmental commitment

Like all electric vehicles, Renault ZOE emits no CO2, NOx, CO or fine particles. It also signals the disappearance of unpleasant smells and 'engine' noise during road use. Well-to-wheel CO2 emissions depend on the energy-generation mix of each country. Emissions total 62 g / km of CO2 in Europe, versus 89 g / km for the new Toyota Prius. They are even lower in France at just 12 g / km of CO2.

From 2013, ZOE's local content rate will be 55 per cent following the introduction of the Renault electric motor which will be produced at the company's Cléon plant. This high rate helps to reduce the carbon footprint of logistics activities.

ZOE complies with the very latest criteria required to qualify for the Renault eco² signature:
  • It is manufactured at Renault's ISO 14001-certified factory at Flins, France.
  • As required by Renault's eco-friendly hallmark, its CO2 emissions are less than 120g/km.
  • ZOE is 85 per cent recyclable, while nine per cent of the plastic it contains is sourced from recycling.

"New Renault Symbol delivers a level of equipment normally associated with vehicles from the next segment up," notes Evrim Gouillou, Marketing Project Manager. "Its new design and attractive equipment package are the perfect answer to meet the demands of customers in Renault's international markets."

Modern styling

New Renault Symbol features Renault's new styling cues. As is the case with all the brand's new models, the front logo is larger and sits in a more prominent, upright position in the middle of a wide, black, chrome-trimmed grille strip.

A standard of comfort and technologies worthy of the next segment up

New Renault Symbol seats up to five adults in perfect comfort thanks to the availability of even more room for rear passengers.

In response to the needs of customers in Renault's international markets, New Renault Symbol comes with a more extensive equipment package, including (depending on version) the Renault Media Nav multimedia navigation system complete with a wide, seven-inch (18cm) touchscreen colour display. Meanwhile, USB and Bluetooth® connectivity enables occupants to enjoy music stored on portable players and to make or take telephone calls in total safety. The specification also includes cruise control with speed limiter, while modularity is enhanced by the 60/40-split folding rear bench seat.

A choice of more economical and more environmentally-respectful engines

New Renault Symbol's customers will be able to specify the new TCe 90 petrol engine. The fuel consumption of this 90-horsepower powerplant is just 5.3 litres/100km, equivalent to 122g of CO2/km. The list also includes the dCi 75 and dCi 90 diesel engines, the fuel consumption and CO2 emissions of which have come down to 3.9 litres/100km and 103g/km respectively.

Renault's hallmark quality

New Renault Symbol has been engineered for use by customers in Renault's international markets and comes with a three-year/100,000km warranty.

Following its unveiling at the 2012 Istanbul Motor Show, New Renault Symbol is scheduled to go on sale in Turkey at the beginning of 2013, before being released in Algeria and Tunisia.
